Security checkpoint between living and work areas

The original checkpoint building has not survived. The building you see today was fully restored based on the original plans.
Prisoners were searched as they passed through the checkpoint on their way to or from work, or to the headquarters building. This place was referred to as the ‘shakedown’ by the prisoners. The building had five compartments which the prisoners had to pass through.

The ‘firing zone’
Two fences divided the working area from the living area, between which passed what was known as the ‘firing zone’. Prisoners were strictly forbidden from entering this area.
